ARTIST: Aston Merrygold SONG: Poison Ivy SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK? When we last wrote about Aston Merrygold, it was November 2017, when he'd suffered the injustice of being booted out half way through that year's series of BBC celebrity ballroom contest Strictly Come Dancing. (It's still a sore subject … Continue reading #SongoftheWeek: Aston Merrygold – ‘Poison Ivy’
Welcome to The Story Of Pop: 1999, our new weekly retro series of posts where we rewind the UK charts back to two whole decades ago and tell the story of one of the most brilliant and sometimes bizarre years for the UK charts. Let's begin then, as all good stories start, at Chapter 1... … Continue reading The Story of Pop: 1999 (Chapter 1)
On the eve of their 30th anniversary since formation, I have to say it. Take That are the best boyband ever. Don't agree with me? It's OK, BTS and Phixx fans the land over. I can understand your protestations you're hurling from behind your screens right now. But I must tell you categorically that you … Continue reading Take That are the best boyband ever. Discuss.

ARTIST: Dido SONG: Christmas Day It seemed appropriate to end this year's Christmas Song Advent Calendar on a song named after this very day - and from a lady who we'll be hearing a lot more of again next year, as Dido prepares to release her long awaited new album in March. This gorgeous festive … Continue reading Christmas Song Advent Calendar 2018: Day 25
ARTIST: Kermit The Frog SONG: One More Sleep Til' Christmas Although it only performed modestly well at the box office on its original December 1992 release, legendary puppet ensemble The Muppets' take on Charles Dickens' popular seasonal novella A Christmas Carol, starring Sir Michael Caine in the role of Scrooge, has proved to be a timeless … Continue reading Christmas Song Advent Calendar 2018: Day 24
ARTIST: Boney M SONG: Mary's Boy Child / Oh My Lord Today's song is the only Christmas song that's been Christmas number one twice in the UK under two different artists. It was of course Harry Belafonte who was the first to take the original 'Mary's Boy Child' to the top for 1956. https://youtu.be/DHcsdmKkoWA Having been … Continue reading Christmas Song Advent Calendar 2018: Day 23
ARTIST: Bananarama SONG: Baby It's Christmas We cheat slightly with the artist picture on today's song. Chiefly because this is a number from the Sara Dallin/Keren Woodward duo wilderness years of the 90s and 00s of the 80s most successful all female group, when they hadn't yet reunited with Siobhan Fahey. https://youtu.be/70rMWtXFMnw But it doesn't take … Continue reading Christmas Song Advent Calendar 2018: Day 22
ARTIST: Katie Melua SONG: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas It seems quite fitting that, on the day 2018's Christmas number one in the UK is revealed later, that we should profile a song that almost made it over 10 years ago. Sort of. By the powers of technology, Katie Melua topped the chart the … Continue reading Christmas Song Advent Calendar 2018: Day 21
ARTIST: Dean Martin SONG: Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! It may seem ludicrous to suggest it, but one of the easiest listening of all the Christmas classics was actually recorded in a heatwave. Absolutely true. Yes, jazz singer and musician Vaughn Monroe recorded the original 'Let It Snow' back in the … Continue reading Christmas Song Advent Calendar 2018: Day 20
